Message Sent
Gavin's eyes passed over the illuminated letters on the screen of his cell phone. He stuffed the phone in his pocket and pulled his shoes on over his grayish socks. It was close to 5 in the morning, the usual time he woke up, but he was already dress and heading out the door. The message was for Serena. "meet me @ courtyard" it read.
It took him all of 5 minutes to reach the courtyard. He really hated the place but he knew no one would be there at this time in the morning. Summer was fading into fall and while the days still were a bit warm, the mornings were almost frigid. He sat down on one of the stone benches and waited for Serena to show. He had a feeling he would be waiting for a while.
While he waited he looked up toward the sky. It was beginning to lighten as the sun rose. From where he was, he couldn't see the sun but he began to see the glow it gave off.

Serena awoke to the sound of her almost robotic cell phone ring. She really didn't give a crap if her cell was playing her favorite song or not. She wouldn't even have gotten one if it wasn't the only way people contacted each other in this modern world. The brightness of the cell phone screen in her dark room blinded her for a moment. Serena could make out the message even with the spots now emerging in front of her eyes.
"meet me @ courtyard", she read. It was from Gavin of course. Only he would think to text her so early. He was always a bit selfish about other peoples beauty sleep. She sighed and got dressed. It took her a few minutes since this was what she was probably going to wear to class. Serena also put on her signature wild eye shadows and dark intense eye liner. After making sure she looked presentable in the mirror she headed for the courtyard.
Autumn was definately on it's way. The cold air nipped her exposed arms. She cursed herself for not remembering a sweat shirt. Serena could even see the faint sight of her breath in the cold. The courtyard was close to her dorm so it only took her a few moments.
When she arrived she saw Gavin sitting on the stone bench. Serena was never able to read his expressions. He could be angry at her or he could just want to talk. She could never be sure.
"Well I'm here." she said with a yawn.

Gavin's eyes were still on the sky when Serena walked in. The sky was tuning an odd shade of gray-orange, which was just as well because Gavin hated orange. He looked over at Serena and immediately noticed her eyes. They made his hands shake a little, her eyes always captivated him.
"Hey." He said quietly. He could feel a small knot forming in the pit of his stomach. He shoved his hands in the pockets of his jacket. He couldn't figure out why he was so nervous. Maybe it had to do with the fact that the only reason why he wanted her to meet him here was because he just wanted to see her. He didn't have a real reason.
"Were you asleep?" He asked when she yawned. He thought about his question and laughed at himself. Of course she was asleep. "That was a dumb question." He mumbled with a small laugh.

If Gavin hadn't corrected himself Serena probably would have responded with a very blunt, you think?. Since he had she just rolled her eyes and sat down next to him. She wasn't a morning person at all and she hated anything that had to do with them. That was the reason she hadn't eaten breakfast since she was ten.
She wasn't particularly excited to see him either. They had just broken up last week for the umpteenth time and Serena was tired of the same lines and weaknesses. They just didn't seem to work as a couple. It was probably because they had too much in common to be perfectly honest. They were in the same clique, liked the same music, and shared a lot of interests. Serena desired for some diversity among her relationships.
"Seriously... was it that important that you talked to me now?" she asked hiding her internal frustration with a weak smile.

Gavin turned to face Serena when she sat down next to him. He examined her face, trying to read her but all he was getting was that she was tired and possibly annoyed. He tried to wrap his mind around what went wrong, what was always going wrong. Their relationships were always ending with some bits of hope that they could get back together but this time Gav was more confused then ever. He didn't want anything to end with Serena. Even if they weren't dating he needed to see her. She made him feel like nothing mattered but when they broke up this time Gavin feared that she didn't want him as a boyfriend but she didn't want him as a friend in general.
Gavin sighed before he spoke. "I guess it's not really important..." He trailed off his sentence and looked back up toward the sky. The gray had turned into a bit of a blue and the majority of the orange had gone away. "I'm sorry I didn't realize how early it was." He said in almost a whisper, keeping his eyes on the sky.

Serena could tell he was still hurting from the breakup. He had loved her a lot, but sadly the feeling wasn't mutual. When they had first gotten together Serena had felt like the luckiest girl in the world. But when she started noticing other guys she often wondered whether she could do better. She knew it was nasty to think that, but she always dreamed of someone more gentle and even maybe artistic. But since she was in Banting she knew those types of guys who probably just think of her as a tough piece of work.
She looked up into the sky. The clouds were a purple color as the sky started to illuminate with light. The darkness that had been in the courtyard was replaced with a warm light. Looking at Gavin she wondered whether being with him was better than being alone.
"So, how have you been?" she asked.

"I've been better." Gavin said and was beginning to calm his nerves. Talking made him feel like something was going right but silence just killed him.
"I was thinking of actually going to class today." He said with a sad laugh. He could barley remember the last time he went to all of his classes. He normally skipped at least one a day. He looked at her for a reaction but her eyes were on the sky like his were. He dropped his eyes to the cracked cement ground and rested his elbows on his knees.
"What have you been up to? Looking for the perfect guy still?" He asked almost maliciously. One of the times they broke up he remembered her saying something to that effect. That Gavin wasn't the her type. Since he couldn't figure out what he was missing he just figured that she wanted someone perfect which doesn't exist. He brought it up now to try and get a stronger reaction from her and maybe get them to talk about the break up rather then dancing around it.

Serena gave a little chuckle when he mentioned he'd been going to class. He must've been really suffering over the breakup if he'd sunk that low. There had been days where they'd just not go to class at all and say on the beach watching the waves. She remembered one day in particular where he'd mentioned that he loved her, that was when it was over for her. Love was a fake and unrealistic word in her opinion.
"What have you been up to? Looking for the perfect guy still?"
The words stung her like a brutal gale in the midst of winter. He wasn't completely right, but there was one guy who had been on his mind. The other day in the auditorium after a rough night of booze she had met Darien Gabrielle. A nerd. She would never tell Gavin how she was beginning to feel about someone so low on the social chart of high school, but she could feel a hidden emotion emerging.
"I've been reading a little actually..." she admitted. When they were still going out Gavin had always questioned why she wasted her time with books, but even as a rebel she couldn't resist them. She only read in the cover of her dorm though.

"Reading..." Gavin scoffed. He found reading to be a daunting task. Why would someone do that for fun? Just rent the movie it's so much easier and more interesting. Gavin could remember reading only one book cover to cover and it was Cat in the Hat. He had tried getting into reading because it was what Serena liked but nothing held his interests. He even tried reading the books that inspired some of his favorite movies but he already knew the endings.
"I still wonder how you ended up in the rebels" He muttered but he knew the answer. She could kick his ass half was across the school without taking a breath. Gavin smiled but a whole new wave of hurt passed over him. He wanted everything to be the same as when they were going out. A comment like that would make her show him how tough she really was but now he feared that she would let it go. As much as it would hurt physically he wanted her to slap him, punch him, anything that would hint at her emotions. He needed something more then small talk but was too afraid to start it himself.

That comment brought bitter anger, but she controlled it. She had learned lately how to do that exactly. She would just say something that would get under his skin... but what? Gavin was a jealous one to say the least. She could just bring up a guy and he would get all defensive. Inside she was smiling evily.
"I'm not sure," she said quite innocently trying to through him off. "That's exactly what this guy I met asked me. He had one hell of a personality he did. And not to mention he's tall, dark, and hansome. Did I tell you he enjoys books as well?"
She was laughing her ass off inside waiting for a response.

Gavin was silent. He felt like he was being eaten alive from inside out. She was lying. She had to be. But she knew it would have that effect on him. F*cking B*tch. He thought to himself but that was the kind of reaction he was looking for. He was trying to get a rise out of her and he got it. But they knew each other too well and they knew how to get under the others skin. She was angry with him, he knew that, and she was trying to mess with his head on purpose. More then anything he was angry too. She knew he was the jealous type, why would she feed into it?
"Oh really? What's his favorite book?" He asked, showing as little emotion as possible.

Serena was having quite the challenge of stopping herself from laughing or even cracking a smile. She contained an innocent nonchalant expression. There was chance he wasn't buying it, but she wasn't going to stop there. She actually had met someone, Darien, and he was tall, dark, and hansome in a peculiar way. He was like the boy next door, while Gavin was like the boy your mother warned you about. Not that she was a angel in any way, but she liked him. She wasn't sure exactly why she was attracted to him. He just seemed so compassionate and humble.
"Hmm, well he loves all sorts. I think his favorites are ones about artists. I've always loved cultured guys." she said smuggly.

Now Gavin was shaking his head. His stomach wasn't in knots anymore cause he could tell she was lying. A cultured guy? Where was she gonna find that in this school, unless she met someone outside the clique. Not only was that unlikely is wasn't like Serena. While Gavin knew she never fit the rebels perfectly it was the only place for her. He wasn't even going to entertain the thought any longer. She didn't meet anyone, she was just a cold faced liar. He smirked when he looked up at her.
"You really had me going there for a bit." He said with a small laugh. "If you wanted me to believe you then you should have left the 'cultured' part out. He still was somewhat angry because he did miss her and she was playing games with his head but at least he could take solace in the fact the Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome was just a rouse she was using to get his blood to boil.

Serena was a little dissapointed that he wasn't getting angry. Even though she had met someone he probably wasn't going to believe her. Also it wouldn't be safe for Darien if she told Gavin about him. Darien was more of a lover than a fighter and he would get demolished. She fished through her mind of ideas of what to say next.
"Oh, did I forget to mention he's kind of not in our inner circle." she said in a tone as cold as ice.
She was not going to say anymore after that. Serena wanted to keep him wondering who the mystery man could be.

Gavin felt it hard not to laugh in her face. Of all people that Gavin knew, Serena would be the least likely to talk with someone out of their "inner circle". While her statement did make him a little uneasy, he did believe her. He couldn't believe her. If he did it would just prove that she was capable of moving on, something which he had yet to accomplish. As much as he tried to forget her he just couldn't. It was in his blood, his father had the same problem with his mother and he knew how well that turned out.
"Then where does he belong?" Gavin asked. He couldn't help the pompous tone that came out in his voice. Even though he had to believe it was a lie he kept pushing it. It was almost like he was testing to see how far Serena would go until she admitted she was a liar.
